The Legacy of Hotel Traube: A Journey Through Time

14th Century: A Royal Meeting Place
In 1343, the site - then a Bavarian ducal castle - hosted Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian in a pivotal meeting with Tyrolean nobility. Political negotiations took place here, marking the location as a significant venue for regional affairs. This early event underscores the building’s historical importance long before it became an inn.

15th Century: A Noble Connection

In 1386 and 1414, the names "Walch" and "Tannberg" were inscribed on the southeast façade, indicating connections to powerful noble families. These inscriptions reflect the building’s role in the political and social life of the region, further emphasizing its significance in Rattenberg’s medieval landscape.

16th Century: The Beginnings of Gasthof Traube

The origins of Gasthof Traube date back to the 16th century when the building was established as a key structure in Rattenberg. As one of the oldest buildings in Austria’s smallest town, it has witnessed centuries of transformation. Rattenberg thrived as a center for trade and craftsmanship, particularly in glassmaking and metalwork. By the late 1500s, the establishment had begun serving travelers, setting the stage for its future as an inn.

17th Century: A Place of Hospitality

By the 17th century, the building had become an essential part of the town’s social and economic fabric. Recognized as a meeting point for travelers, merchants, and artisans, it provided a place for rest and exchange. Its strategic location along trade routes made it a popular stopover. In 1654, the name and coat of arms of Susanna von Schidenhofen were inscribed on the building, a testament to her influence during the mid-17th century.

18th Century: The Birth of the Traube Name

During the 18th century, the establishment adopted the name "Traube," symbolizing prosperity, community, and the region’s rich viticultural heritage. Inns named "Traube" were commonly associated with warm hospitality and fine wine, reflecting the spirit of European taverns at the time. The building was further expanded to accommodate more guests, reinforcing its reputation as a favored destination.

19th Century: The Golden Age of Travel

With the rise of tourism and advancements in transportation, Gasthof Traube flourished as a preferred stop for visitors exploring the Alpine landscapes. The inn evolved into a full-service hotel, offering enhanced amenities for distinguished guests. Rattenberg’s charm, combined with its cultural significance, attracted travelers from near and far, further cementing Traube’s status as a landmark of hospitality.

20th Century: Transformation and Modernization

The 20th century brought significant changes to Gasthof Traube. As times evolved, so did the hotel, undergoing renovations to blend historic charm with modern comfort. Despite world events, the establishment remained a beacon of resilience, welcoming generations of guests. Its timeless character was carefully preserved, honoring its deep-rooted heritage while adapting to contemporary expectations.

21st Century: A New Era of Elegance

In 2025, Gasthof Traube was rebranded as Hotel Traube, marking a new chapter while preserving its rich history. Since 2019, extensive renovations have enhanced the structure, guest rooms, and historical details. Modern amenities have been thoughtfully integrated while maintaining the building’s original charm, with special attention to preserving key architectural elements such as the façade and distinctive interior details.
